Animation- Tag- Attack!!!

Ok this post has come pretty late on but hey, better late than never eh? Plus we’ve been busy on a few side jobs which ended up eating a bit more of our time than intended…. Ah well down to bid-niss! So the talented Animator/ illustrator/ musician & all round cool guy Christen Bach who we had the pleasure of connecting with through the Berlin Pictoplasma Festival was kind enough to invite myself & co-director Ewen to take part in his ‘Animation Tag Attack‘… “Animation tag who”!?? I hear you say? Well in his words:

“Each participant gets 4 weeks to produce between 5 and xx seconds of film. When the time is up, the clip gets uploaded to the blog and the next one in line takes over. It is up to each individual creator to pick the style and media they want to work in - and to decide how they think the story should evolve.”

Well Ewen & I actually completed our episodes a little while back so here they are for you to enjoy! I kicked off our participation with episode:06 & Ewen followed with 07. Hope you guys like…

Our latest endeavour…

Over the last couple of months we’ve been hard at work on some self initiated experiments. Why? Well, way back in 2008 we directed a commercial for the Central Office of Information {COI} entitled “Try Life In Another Language”. The ad, which has been aired across several tv channels, including Channel 4 and MTV was aimed at teenagers and young adults, and encouraged them to learn another language (French in this case). We created a 30-second spot which was to look like a snippet of a much longer music video, like something you might stumble across inbetween channel hopping. However, to create something a bit different from the norm and much more engaging we decided to combine drawn animation with live action. Not a new technique certainly but definately new to us. So we shot the video on location in Paris, and then locked ourselves away for 6 weeks to begin the painful process of animating over every single frame. It was a challenging project in many ways and lessons were learned but it was ultimately a joy to work on.

So what does this have to do with anything? Well, the feedback from the ad was hugely positive.  But, due to the fact that we were swamped with work afterwards we never had a chance to explore the crossover medium further. Which brings us to now! With some time on our hands and the desire to work on something purely for us, we decided this would be a good time to revisit the techniques started back then and see where it takes us.

Here’s some style frames we knocked up to kick things off:
